Leadership Skills for New Managers

About this course

The day you are promoted, your best skill becomes the one you use least. This course is for the person who was good at the work and now has to lead the people who do it. It runs in seven sections and one module: the move from doing the work to leading it, the title as a loan you repay person by person, the values you stand on, setting direction from the middle, leading across to peers, the team you inherit, and handing work off and putting it on paper. Module E runs the same models across ENRICH, for the team you actually have. It closes with one map of the whole course, an honest rating, and your first three moves.

Along the way you learn ten models: the Promotion Trap, the Vacation Test, the Influence Staircase, the LEADERSHIP Values, P.A.T.H.S., P.E.E.R., the Peer Map, The Handover Nobody Gives You, Rounds Not Patrols, and the Hand-Off Ladder. Four full cases let you make the call before you hear how Duane would read it.

Who it is for

  • New and first-time managers, including people promoted over their former peers.
  • Supervisors and team leads who are still doing the work while leading it.
  • Anyone about to step into a management role who wants to start well.

Learning objectives and outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  1. Spot the Promotion Trap. Notice when the skill that got you promoted is getting in the way, and run the Vacation Test on your own team.
  2. Lead former peers. Handle the first conversations with the people who were your peers yesterday.
  3. Earn influence person by person. Place each person on the Influence Staircase and choose the next step with them.
  4. Stand on values you can prove. Check the LEADERSHIP Values against what you actually did last week.
  5. Set direction from the middle. Turn direction from above into Monday's work with P.A.T.H.S., including a target you argued against.
  6. Lead across. Map your peers and use P.E.E.R. with people who owe you nothing.
  7. Read what you inherited and hand work off. Open the five folders of The Handover Nobody Gives You, walk rounds, climb the Hand-Off Ladder, and write it down only when you must.
  8. Manage across ENRICH. Run the same models for every person on your team without guessing about anyone's culture.
