Influence Coaching

HBWE Coaching for Professionals
and ENRICH Outsiders

All Sessions via Zoom. Worldwide.

My goal in coaching is to help you change something, to do something differently in order to change your patterns, which led to an undesirable outcome... to influence.

Duane K. Andrews coaching an executive

This Is Not Therapy. This Is Strategy.

If you have ever pulled someone aside after a workshop to ask the question you could not ask in the room, this is the space for that conversation. I have spent over twenty years coaching professionals who work in environments that were not designed for them, and the ones who advance share one skill: the ability to influence.

Influence is not manipulation. It is the most important interpersonal skill you can master. No one is going to do anything for you just for the hell of it. You must know how to influence them... how to get them to do something for you when they don't have to.

"If you want to achieve anything in life you MUST master the skill of INFLUENCE."

Whether you are an ENRICH Outsider navigating a predominantly white institution or any professional trying to lead up, my coaching is built on the HBWE (Human Behavior in the Work Environment) framework: understanding people, systems, and the unwritten rules so you can change your outcomes.

The Questions I Get Asked Most

These are the real questions my clients bring to coaching. If you see yourself in any of them, we should talk.

Navigating Your Boss & Organization

  • How do I get my boss to take me seriously?
  • How do I get promoted?
  • How do I implement a new strategy in my company or department?
  • How do I lead a team when none of the team members report directly to me?
  • How do I change my behavior?
  • What should I focus on in this interview in order to get the job?
  • How do I make a pitch to a potential investor?
  • How do I survive a company merger?
  • How do I supervise a virtual team?
  • How do I survive and thrive in a millennial work environment when I'm not a millennial?
  • How do I navigate getting things done in a startup?
  • How do I interview with a company I previously worked for?
  • How do I get more resources for my team?
  • How do I survive and thrive in a family business if I'm not family?
  • How do I succeed in a job I don't like?
  • When and how should I leave my current job?
  • How do I thrive under a disgruntled boss?
  • How do I maintain my good reputation in a poorly run company?
  • How do I motivate my staff when I have no control of pay or merit increases?
  • How do I support my newly appointed manager when I believe I was better for the job?
  • How do I start my company and keep my job?
  • How do I manage a poor performing employee who is protected by the union?

The ENRICH Outsider Questions ENRICH

  • How do I lead up when my boss does not see me as part of the team?
  • How do I get credit for my work when my ideas get attributed to others?
  • How do I respond to microaggressions without being labeled difficult?
  • How do I deal with lateral aggression from peers who see me as competition?
  • When should I stay and fight, and when should I plan my exit?
  • How do I get into my boss's inner circle when I was never invited?
  • How do I get honest feedback when my boss avoids giving me any?
  • My boss told me I need more "executive presence." What does that really mean?
  • How do I stop being the person everyone leans on for diversity work that never gets rewarded?
  • I was passed over for someone less qualified. What do I do now?
  • How do I build alliances when I am the only one who looks like me in the room?
  • How do I protect my reputation when the narrative about me has already been written?

The 4-Step Coaching Process

Every coaching engagement follows a structured, evidence-based process designed to produce measurable change. This is not a conversation. This is an intervention.

01

Coaching Agreement

You and I will mutually define a coaching intervention to address key identified issues along with a metric to evaluate coaching effectiveness. The client relationship will be defined along with a discussion of relevant assessment(s) to facilitate the coaching process.

02

Job Performance Assessment

You will complete one of our job-related management assessment instruments targeted to critical performance, leadership, managerial, and personal development competencies associated with high performance. These may include personality, career, or stress/resilience measures depending on the coaching goals.

03

Coaching & Feedback

You and I will engage in feedback and coaching meeting(s) to discuss the results and findings from the assessment instruments. Sessions will also address current work, team, and organizational situations that arise during the coaching process, including relevant resources and assigned readings.

04

Development Plan

To complete the coaching process, we will jointly create and discuss a professional development action plan utilizing the detailed reports from the assessment(s) as well as conclusions derived from the feedback and coaching session(s).

Coaching Built for ENRICH Outsiders

Most executive coaches have never navigated a workplace where their Ethnicity, Nationality, Race, Identity, Culture, or Heritage made them the outsider. I have. That changes everything about the coaching.

I Name What Others Won't

If what you are experiencing is bias, I will call it that. I will not ask you to "assume positive intent" or pretend the playing field is level. We start with what is actually happening.

Strategy, Not Sympathy

Validation is step one. But you did not come here to feel understood. You came here to change something. Every session ends with specific actions, language, and frameworks you can use immediately.

Research-Backed, Experience-Informed

My coaching draws on the HBWE framework, the 17 Keys, and research from scholars like Claude Steele, Derald Wing Sue, and Kimberly Crenshaw -- people who studied what you live every day.

The Full Picture

We do not just address your boss. We address peer dynamics, lateral aggression, organizational culture, identity-based exhaustion, visibility strategy, and when necessary, your exit plan.

Psychometric Assessment Included

Every coaching engagement includes a validated assessment instrument targeted to your coaching goals: personality, career, stress/resilience, or leadership competency measures that give us data to work with, not just feelings.

The Questions Behind the Questions

When you say "How do I get promoted?" and you are an ENRICH Outsider, the answer is fundamentally different than the one in any mainstream leadership book. I coach from that reality.

Data-Driven Coaching

Every coaching engagement includes at least one psychometric assessment. These are not personality quizzes from the internet. These are validated, job-related instruments that give us a clear picture of where you are and what needs to change.

Assessments may include (but are not limited to):

Personality assessments Career development instruments Stress and resilience measures Leadership competency assessments Emotional intelligence measures Management style inventories

The specific assessment is selected based on your coaching goals and discussed during Step 1 of the coaching process.
