About this course
Most people treat promotion as a posting: they wait for the role to go up, then they apply. By then the decision is often already made. This course is about the year before that moment, the answer when it comes, and the next cycle after a no. It is for high performers who keep hearing "not yet" without a usable reason, for managers who want a fair path for themselves and for the people they develop, and for anyone who has watched a role get filled by someone who was never posted.
You learn the phases of a role (Named, Posted, Announced), how to be known while names are still being raised, how to tell a real role from a favor, how to name the test you are already in, how to get senior support without going around your boss, and how to stay replaceable on purpose so "too valuable to move" does not strand you.
ENRICH (Ethnicity, Nationality, Race, Identity, Culture, Heritage), the identity lens created by Duane K. Andrews and Sherry M. Jerimie, sits over the whole map: nationality here means country of origin, and the course never treats immigration or visa status as the teaching example. The politics of who gets raised are not the same for everyone, and pretending they are is how good people stay stuck.
Cases, pauses and workbook prompts let you make the call on a real role before you hear how Duane reads it. By the end you know which phase your next role is in, who is raising names, what your first line is, and what you will do the week after a yes or a no.
Who it is for
- High performers who keep hearing "not yet" without a usable reason.
- Managers who want a fair path for themselves and for the people they develop.
- Anyone who has watched a role get filled by someone who was never posted.
- Leaders who need a calendar for the year before the decision, not a pep talk.
Learning objectives and outcomes
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Name the phase. Tell Named from Posted from Announced before anyone posts the role.
- Find who raises names. Map the people who shape the decision, by role not by rumor.
- Separate role from favor. Spot when a move is a real role and when it is a favor with no owner.
- Name the test. Say the audition you are already in, ask how it ends, and write it down.
- Carry a name upstairs. Get senior support with your boss's knowledge, not around it.
- Stay replaceable on purpose. Escape the "too valuable to move" trap without burning the seat you are in.
- Handle the yes and the no. Run the weeks after a yes and the quarter after a no as the start of the next cycle.
- Apply ENRICH on the path. Read how identity shows up in who gets known, who gets tested, and who gets carried.
