Darnell -- Black male team lead

Darnell inherited a team that had been underperforming under a previous manager who had left suddenly. The team was demoralized, skeptical of new leadership, and carrying unresolved conflict from the previous tenure. What Darnell did was not complicated. He listened for two weeks before he changed anything. He held individual conversations with every team member. He named the history explicitly -- "I know the last period was difficult and that you have reasons to be cautious about new leadership" -- instead of pretending the slate was clean. Build a quarterly leadership portfolio: specific outcomes you drove, decisions you made and their results, development investments in your team. This is not bureaucratic -- it is the infrastructure of institutional credibility.

Know When Staying Is the Strategy and When Leaving Is. Leadership potential has an institutional ceiling in some environments. ENRICH leaders who have built genuine capability and documented it thoroughly sometimes discover that the limiting factor is not their readiness -- it is the institution's willingness to extend authority equitably. Recognizing that distinction is itself a leadership skill.
