Asha set a specific, measurable, time-bound goal: promotion to senior manager within 18 months. She executed against every internal criterion. At month 18, she was told she was almost ready. ENRICH professionals who set only performance goals often achieve those goals and still do not advance. The structural goals are not secondary -- they are equally necessary.

Know When Staying Is the Strategy and When Leaving Is. Goal-setting requires an honest assessment of whether the environment you are in is one where your goals are achievable. Not all institutional goals are achievable for ENRICH professionals regardless of how well they execute. Part of sophisticated goal management is the capacity to distinguish between a goal that is hard but possible and a goal that is structurally blocked in your current context -- and to act on that distinction rather than redoubling effort in a closed direction.
